2022 Favorites
Alright lets get into this years favorites. I am not making these exclusively about photography because I want to share more than that with you. Let’s go!
My Top Movie of The Year
Okay so this was very hard for me to choose just ONE movie for the whole year but when I really narrowed it down it had to be this wild ride of a film ZOLA.
Shot on 16mm and derived from Twitter posts by a stripper it’s kind of crazy and ridiculous but it’s also extremally well executed, artfully presented and Riley Keough’s performance is scarily brilliant. You could watch this film for its visuals alone. The colors are so saturated and just bleed out and hit you right in the face along with the content of the film. It’s a truly original vision based off such an unlikely starting point, a movie about Twitter posts?? Director Janicza Bravo has brought to life these online ramblings in such a unique way, it all just works so well and feels so right for the time we are living in. I would say this is for fans of another one of my favs “Springbreakers” if you liked that you will most likely be into ZOLA.
Favorite Camera
Like you, I have way too many cameras and not enough time to use them all. Alas, it’s a hazard of most film photographers who also double as parents or have demanding lives.
I do switch it up quite a bit when deciding what to grab off the shelf but the last few months I can’t get my hands off this Minolta AF-C. Every time Lux asks me what I wanna take on a family outing or what he should load up in the camera bag, I find myself answering A F C, every single time. My first roll through it was so sharp and it hasn’t disappointed since. I pushed some now hard-to-get Kodak colorplus in it last time and the results came out AMAZING! I just vibe with this camera so much. It’s cute, simple and has a flash, I mean that’s really all you need. Well, actually it’s probably not, it’s really all I need and therefore it’s my fav camera of 2022.
This wasn’t an easy choice either, I mean this whole newsletter was kind of like Sophie’s Choice, good thing I only have one kid hey. So as not to upset my other camera babies I will give honorable mentions to a few others I have thoroughly enjoyed over the year. In no particular order.
Canon Powershot G2 - Shout out to Ali from OMTC for this gift!
Fuji x20 - Possibly the best Fuji X camera out there (sorry X100V)
Yashica T4 - largely due to the fact that I cannot believe I finally own one so I just like to carry it around with me and think how happy the teen Lucy is that at 30 years of age I sleep at night with T4 in my home and possession. Thank you Chris I know you are reading :)
My OM10 - The perfect SLR and it’s made even better with my orange butter grip from Cameradayctl. Use my code Lucy10 at checkout till the end of December to get 10% OFF - Thanks Ethan
Olympus strikes again in the form of my sexy AF Pen Ft in mint condition all black and just an absolute beauty and joy to use. Plus 72 frames?? Yes please! Video coming soon on my thoughts on Half Frame.
Favorite Film Stock
So the price of film is through the roof and not only that, you are lucky if you can even find film, let alone complain about the price of it. But all in all, 2022 was a pretty epic year for film stocks! Including my personal fav CineStill 400D, which I only shot one roll of so it’s kind of not really a good gauge of how much I actually like it, but this is my newsletter and I chose CineStill 400D for the title of favorite film stock!
I’m not sure if it was the event that I shot on this stock that made me love it or maybe it’s just that halation just doing it’s thing and making us all love, or hate, CineStill so much! The colors were great, there was plenty to play with in terms of latitude and the classic cars glistening in the sun just paired so well with this stocks characteristics. I just wish it wasn’t so damn expensive.
Radical Yes - Shoes To Live In
These shoes came to me via the Melbourne brand Radical Yes who if you don’t know you NEED to check out!
Their tagline is “Creativity and Movement” two things that are constant and so important in my life. Everyday is full of creativity for me and I’m forever chasing after Luca, out on a photo walk, or filming for YouTube with Lux, so I really need to comfy but I also wanna be stylish! This has been a long term conundrum for me in almost every aspect of life and I feel like since turning 30 I’m way more committed to finding brands that make good quality items that I can live in, but still feel like I’m expressing my sense of style.
These Tangerine dream Space Jam Sandals from Radical Yes have ticked all the boxes and I even did a fun shoot with them and our FujiX20 and some Instax Wide! Check them out below and def go have a look at all the rad things that Radical Yes make, like sunnies and bags! I love their whole vibe and can’t wait to stomp through 2023 in my comfy AF sandals.
More to come in part 2…
Okay so to be totally honest with you my day got completely derailed, mainly due to the fact that my toddler refused to nap and instead spent the entire time in his cot yelling out the word, Santa, which is his new obsession. A few other things got in the way and now I feel like it’s taken me a whole day to write this. But hey, that’s okay. I’ll leave it here and pick it up next Friday for more 2022 favorites straight to your inbox.
If you missed this video I put it out yesterday I highly recommend giving it a watch especially if you feel stuck, stagnant or frustrated with your photography and want some suggestions of where to put your energy and time come the new year.
Fantastic read my friend! Cinestill 400 has been living in my camera the last month.
