So let’s get in to this week’s thoughts, which are all about music, ‘cause as you know I like to stray from talking strictly photography 24/7… plus who doesn’t love music, right?!?
House Call - NTS Radio
So I used to work with this incredible Italian girl named Loren and she told me about this radio show on a shift once. Since then I have been recommending it left, right and center to anyone who will listen, or in your case, read.
House Call is brought to you by Dr. Kruger and focuses mostly on soul, doo-wop, jazz, classic disco, funk and everything in between. You can expect to feel happy and nourished after a good session with the DJ Dr. Kruger spinning some crackly, vinyl goodness that will no doubt lift your spirits.
This is a great equalizer and crowd pleaser if you have people over and wanna just chuck something on that is lush sounding but not intrusive. Similarly, if you wanna get some shit done at home like cleaning or cooking, I would definitely recommend popping this on really loud and going hell for leather with the vacuum to spice up any mundane task.
My mother was/is a big Motown fan and I have so many fond memories of her singing and dancing…and cleaning to that kind of music. She clearly passed it down to me and I am happy to continue the family tradition with a few more obscure tracks from this stellar NTS show, House Call.
Oh one more thing, they also have an app you can download and if you are a total monster who doesn’t enjoy any of these genres on House Call then please explore the myriad of other playlists available Like this one from Melbourne Musician and legend Mikey Young or this one from the PIL inspired Aussie band EXEK.
Henry Rollins - KCRW Radio
So there is a high chance you already know who Henry Rollins is. If you don’t, well you should look him up and find out. He pops up in almost every single music doco ever released and whilst I can’t say I’m actually a huge fan of him for various reasons, all pretty dumb, personal ones tbh, I do however enjoy this radio show he hosts.
This one is super varied and you never know what to expect. Admittedly, sometimes it feels like Henry is exposed to so much music that he ends up doing that “cool record store owner/worker” thing where you play some kind of extremely obscure album that no one except for you has heard of and it’s actually either unlistenable, awful or both and there is a good reason it’s obscure. Just put some Ramones on and be done with it I say!
Jokes aside, I have done this myself when playing music for friends, as I am a huge music snob. I think when you are really involved with music it ends up like film photography, suddenly you no longer get a rush from just shooting 35mm anymore and you end up going down the large format road, landing yourself in a niche that is even smaller and less accessible than your original “weird” “outdated” hobby. I’m looking at you Jason.
Anyway, this is a must for punk, post punk, HC, indie or any of those alternative genres that love anything off the wall, weird and grating sounding to most. Henry also plays a fair share of Australian stuff which I really appreciate and enjoy hearing his thoughts on what is brewing down under in the music scene.
Give it a go and let me know if you find anything cool. I often pause it and search the artist + song in Spotify and then save it and end up with some new bangers to flog in the car. Nice.
Indie Sleaze 4EVA
Matt Murray joked that the phrase Indie Sleaze should be a part of a Lucy Lumen bingo situation, which I found to be hilarious. Matt is right on the money here as I feel like a broken MGMT record with how much I’m bringing up Indie Sleaze lately, but it’s the first time I have lived through a cultural movement that was actually decent and is now being celebrated.
If you don’t know about Indie Sleaze listen to this podcast episode it’s brilliant.
While you are at it, chuck on this Spotify playlist to hear the sounds of sleaze and reminisce on 2001 and all the great records that were released. I was busy looking for drainpipe jeans and begging my mum to let me go to a music festival to see The Strokes and in reality I was just dancing in my room to Is This It and crushing hard on Julian and his lazy ass, I don’t care performance in the video clip for their hit song “Last Night”.
Enjoy, Sleaze bags.
Nights with Alice Cooper - Rebel Radio
This one is a bit more, boomer, shall we say. Alice Cooper is a music legend and pretty cool guy. He takes over a radio station on weeknights that is located here, on the Gold Coast, which is pretty damn cool!
Nights with Alice Cooper is a rock fest featuring all the usual stuff but laced in are new tracks he is loving. I have also heard him play some Aussie stuff on there from time to time which is super cool. I wanted to share this as maybe people over seas likely don’t know about Rebel Radio and having Alice Cooper be on this local radio show so often is pretty rad.
My dad has no Bluetooth in his car, I don’t think he knows what Bluetooth is actually, so he just exclusively listens to Rebel Radio on his drives and it feels like the most “dad” station of all time. I borrow his car quite often and tracks from The Who, Free or Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel come on and I smile at the “dadness” of it all.
Shout out to you dad, thanks for letting me mooch off you and use your car.
Next Time…
Next weeks newsletter will be an interview with a photographer who loves colour and direct flash, and no, it’s not me. This guys work is super cool and he has some links to music as well, so hit that subscribe button below so you don’t miss it!
Thank you for reading, Love Lucy xx
Interesting read Lucy. Looking at the photo at the top, it seems to me you might need your record deck on a lower shelf or you need some very high heels!!
