Happy New Year!
We are at the end of the very first week of January 2024 and I have to say I am feeling inspired, excited and ready to be challenged with new opportunities. I’m also secretly loving that we are so far away from Christmas time because it’s my least fav time of year and that could be where this good feeling is coming from.
2023 wasn’t easy for anyone I don’t think and since Covid it’s felt like one blow or punch to the gut after another. Whether that’s finical strain, loss of motivation for creative pursuits, feelings of helplessness due to the state of the world or something more personal like family members not showing up for you in the way you’d hope. Whatever it is, life is pretty hard sometimes.
If you let these things rule you and allow be your narrative to be this negative plotline you are victim to then the only thing I can guarantee is that things will stay the same, or get worse. So remembering YOU are in control is a great way to spark yourself up, stand tall and start mapping out the year ahead with positivity and good intentions.
I’ve started setting my goals for this year but I’m not sure it’s helpful hearing other peoples goals is it? Instead I want to link you to these blog posts by Kaylene Langford from Start Up Creative who offers up so much goodness on this topic and will leave you feeling equipped for the year ahead. You can also check out Kay’s podcast and hear insightful interviews from creative business owners over there. Love Kay so much!
So What’s This About a New Channel?
As you know I love photography and I love the community that surrounds it but truth be told I do feel a little burnt out on the topic sometimes and when it comes to making videos I just haven’t felt that motivated to talk about anything in particular.
I have a new fish eye lens from TT Artisans that I am in the process of reviewing but I don’t feel that flow of ideas for videos I want to make when it comes to photography. I have been thinking about why this is and it’s defiantly a combo of these two things…
Feeling boxed in within my niche and like I’m only sharing half of who I am and what I’m actually into. The way YouTube works is once you are cemented in a niche it’s hard to do anything but that. It’s also a platform where people go to learn or research topics so naturally videos on cameras and lenses will do well. I’ve always tried to do this a little different on my channel and reference pop culture fashion, music and other things and whilst the odd person really enjoys this aspect I do feel like most people want the review and to just know the specs etc. I also feel that YouTube is increasingly difficult when it comes to titling and making thumbnails and I really hope they work to improve the way videos get a chance to be seen and discovered because I know I see stuff that is great and it’s totally underviewed. Anyway maybe I just also need a break from the channel?
The last six months have been MASSIVE for me and I’m getting more and more client work so this is where most of my time is going. I still want to make videos for YT but I want them to have synergy with my life and I wanna be able to talk about my new fashion client, prepping for the job, the box of perfume I’ve been sent or what I’m having for dinner. God damn it I want to VLOG! I never thought I would be typing that in this newsletter but I guess you never know. Seriously though I just wanna rearrange my record collection and turn on the camera without someone saying “isn’t this a photography channel?”
So…I bring you Life Of Lucy. This video is specifically about how to become a content creator in 2024 and this is a video I have been yearning to make for so long now. If you have ever wanted to become a full time online creator or even a fashion/lifestyle photographer/videographer then this video is a step by step guide of what I would do to get started.
Content creation not your thing? All good! Check out this fun thrift haul where I share my tips for finding the best pieces and how movies have inspired my style over the years. I’m always thrifting for cameras and clothes so I’m excited to share more of these videos on this new channel. You can now also follow me on Depop too and shop my wardrobe there. Before I had my son I had a little Depop business and I absolutely loved it.
So What About The Other Channel & Photography?
I am 100% still into film photography and pretty much 90% of the paid work I do is all on film and most clients come to me for that so it’s very much a part of my life! I will be uploading on the main channel still when I have something to review or an exciting photography adventure to share but I am hoping to be uploading weekly on the new Life Of Lucy channel so you can find me there!
This newsletter will remain as it always has been. A place to share my interviews with other photographers and artists as well as sharing my latest work, projects, advice and creative musings.
I have an exciting interview with a new found female portrait photographer who you should follow - find her here - and I plan to share more tips on how to sell prints locally, trying out markets and content surrounding exhibiting your work and finding your voice/place as an artist.
It’s been so fun growing with you all the past few years and I am feeling so content and happy with this new channel and feel this is finally the me I want to share online.
Hit me up if you have questions or suggestions for content on the new channel and I’ll see you guys over there should you choose to join, otherwise stay tuned for more photo content here next week. Happy new year everyone!
