Our Stories On Film Zine! - ISSUE 10
A look inside an exciting new zine showcasing female and non-binary film photographers.
Girls to the front
In 2022 we hear a lot of dialogue around diversity, inclusion and the need for equal representation across many sectors of our society. Not all of us take this ethos to the next level and put our money where our mouth is and create, not only online communities, but physical ones as well. It is, after all, community that is at the heart of this exciting new zine you are about to read up on.
Photographer Joey Chan started a discord group reserved for female shooters, as well as any non binary or female identifying people, under the name of “ourstoriesonfilm” in the hope of nurturing others looking to explore film photography. This discord server creates a safe place for women to ask questions, share their work and connect, without the, let’s face it, always inevitable unsavory comments made by males on platforms like Facebook and Reddit.
The thought of anybody, not just females, being put off of continuing with a hobby and art form like film photography cuts me to my core, and communities like this allow diverse groups of people to enjoy, experience and learn without the unnecessary gate keeping that so often occurs online. Recently the community have taken it to another level and in collaboration have produced a good looking and unique printed zine.
Our Stories On Film - Volume 1
For the last 9 months Joey Chan and the passionate team that make up this community have been working hard on bringing the IG page @ourstoriesonfilm to life in a physical zine featuring 33 artists from across the globe.
What led us to the creation of this zine was recognizing the need for greater representation and celebration of women and non-binary folk in the field of photography. Our goal for this zine is to elevate the work of these artists globally and for viewers to see more perspectives of universal human experiences. So in December 2021, we put a call out to film photographers around the world to participate in this community-led print publication. - Joey Chan
The pages of this zine span all subjects and genres with photographers exploring the theme of Identity and what that means to them. We all know the importance of printing our work and supporting others who do so and this feels like a zine worth splurging on, even if you don’t normally collect printed work. Flip through over a coffee and get inspired by not only the photography in this book but also the hard work and dedication to the message and true sense of community around this awesome project!
This zine is available for pre-order now and the team that is “Our Stories On Film” have a goal to sell 100 copies in the month of October to enable the print, shipment and arrival of it to your doorstep, worldwide, in time for Christmas! So you know what you need to do… treat yourself, or a film loving friend to what will likely be the first of several more volumes in the future.
