Now Some Words…
So I considered just sending this out to you with no words at all, but I couldn’t help myself. I like to leave my images as they are with no context, in terms of camera and stock but I also like to leave them without explanation, as I feel they are largely visual pieces and when in a sequence as they are shown above, the themes and ideas speak quite loudly to the viewer.
What I will say is this - I took all of these just wondering around with Lux and no YouTube video in mind. There was no broll to film or thumbnail image to snap. It was just walking and noticing things and taking photos, which is what I have always done. Too much of one or the other however is not healthy for me.
I need to be seen or have an end point for my photography otherwise I don’t feel like doing it that often - it feels frivolous to me. When I create too much for others though, I tend to feel pressured and lose sight of what I really want to do or say or see. It’s a balance, like most things in life.
I felt free when I took these photos and as a result I think my style has really come through and I like them, so much so that I want to share them even though that wasn’t the intention. So it comes full circle you see. When you feel you aren’t having to create for a specific purpose you feel more free and possibly in control?
On the contrary though sometimes specifics are very much needed. If I go on too long with no constraints and full free range, that in itself becomes suffocating too. It’s funny how our mind plays tricks on us like this. I like to try and play tricks back that will help me to stay creative and keep me photographing for a long time to come. What tricks do you play?
So that’s it for this week. Mostly photos and a few words. Next week I bring you an interview with the hosts of a new film photography podcast called Emulsions. Click the button below to listen and get a feel for the hosts so you can love the interview even more.
