A Few Updates
So we are nearing the end of the year and I kind of feel like this is the time we all start to feel burnt out, frantic, stressed and ready for a holiday or some down time. Or maybe it’s just me??? How ever you are feeling and where ever you are at right now, here are some of the things I’ve put out that you may have missed. These could be a welcome distraction, or just a bit of entertainment for the week to come.
Catch Matt and I chatting film photography on our second live stream of The Analog Hour. I guarantee you some laughs in this one!
Ever thought about starting a YouTube channel? Maybe you have one but you would love some tips on how to better get it off the ground? Give my latest article a read and implement some of my tips. Let me know how you go or if you have any other questions!
Don’t forget the channel memberships is open now and by joining you will receive access to a members only live stream with Lux and I monthly, plus lots more perks. I have released my latest photo walk video a week early on there too. Hit the button below to join the club! :)
One thing I have done differently this year is submit my photography to various platforms. This is not something I was ever good at but after a year of being more proactive and learning it’s not all about being chosen, I feel a new sense of resilience and confidence. Now when I see the words “Open Call” pop up on my IG story I don’t scroll on past, I submit with excitement!
So I want to share with you a few places that are worth keeping an eye out for in terms of submitting your photography. Let’s go!
BROAD MAG x REPPINK’S SELECTS
If you don’t already follow BROAD MAG on IG def change that once you’ve finished reading this newsletter. The selection of images on there are always amazing and are right up my alley with the focus on everyday, mundane, banal type photography.
Recently they have put out an open call for a print issue selected by Reppink aka Marlène Meyer-Dunker, who is a regular contributor to the mag online and in print. The parameters of this open call are very loose, which should make it fairly appealing to many of you. There is a submission fee but it goes towards keeping the publication running. I have paid my fee and am currently selecting some work to submit. You should too, but get in now as it closes November 30th!
LOW KEY ZINE
This zine is like a dream come true. It looks so cool, has amazing design, and if you are in Australia, IT’S FREE! Just pay postage and it’s yours. International folk can still grab this awesome zine for the low price of $15 which is most certainly a bargain. Follow Low Key Zine on IG for updates on when they have an open call and submit for free to perhaps see your images in print. This is a great first go at submitting your work as the zine is super casual and it’s free and easy to enter.
Frankie Magazine
Okay, this is a long shot as it’s an extremely popular publication but, hey you gotta be in it to win it right?
I have been an avid Frankie reader for many years now and I adore buying a copy or picking it up from local library when money is tight. It’s filled with art, photography, essays, cooking, craft, interior design and just anything worth knowing about or falling in love with. I recently pitched a story to them which I doubt will be chosen but it made me feel so accomplished just sending the email to them and giving it a go.
They have a dedicated section for photography so head on over and read the deets and get submitting! Let me know if you do I will be super pumped for you :)
Locals Only
We sometimes forget that we can actually walk into somewhere and talk to people in the flesh and show them our work!?! Don’t forget to be chatty with your local gallery, creative space, cafés, pop up shops or event spaces. These places may want to collab on something with a local photographer or even have your work on the walls for sale or do a group show. You just never know. Being the daughter of a very chatty mother I learnt from a young age that being open to new conversations can really land you in some awesome places.
I recently entered some work to a local art agency and will be part of an annual design calendar as well as being a part of a group exhibition 15 minutes from my home. More on that in the next few weeks though. If I can do it, you can do it, so get out in your local arts community and make shit happen for yourself!
