In Praise Of Luca Guadagnino
Confession time. I have always longed to be Italian, the food alone is enough to convince anyone with tastebuds and a pulse but for me it’s so much more than just that. It’s the most romantic and ideal culture, at least through my super Australian lens it is.
I had the Duolingo app and really went hard trying to learn the language. I even did a short course before I met Lux on the basics of Italian and I dreamed of moving there and leaving my nasal Queensland accent behind me in favor of a new Italiano life!
My love for anything Italian came from my original love for Nigella Lawson, who also wishes she was Italian and lived out her early twenties as a chambermaid in Italy. She went on to make a name for herself cooking on TV and writing cookbooks which sounded, smelled, tasted and read as if she really was a true Italian native. She even went to the length of giving both her children Italian names, Bruno and Mimi, in an attempt to bring herself closer to her desire. Nigella could fool anyone who wasn’t aware of her deeply routed Jewish heritage and for a while I thought maybe I could too??
I worked for many years in an Italian deli slinging espresso and panino all day long. Stocking the shelves come Christmas time with Panettone after Panettone. As I cut hunks of Parmigiana Reggiano and sliced thin layers of melt in your mouth Mortadella, passing them over the high counter top to regular customers, some of whom were actually authentically Italian, I had almost convinced myself that I was too!
I lived for the little note inside my Baci chocolate when I was on my break and I didn’t even feel guilty for eating chocolate everyday because it was Italian chocolate and it was my right as a faux Italian girl. Anyway so what does this have to do with photography? Don’t worry it links back…
So my sons name is Luca, a popular Italian name that was chosen before he was even conceived as a direct result of the genius of another person who shares this same name.
Director of many great films such as I am Love, A Bigger Splash and a personal fav, Call Me By Your Name, which if you weren’t that crash hot on Italy before watching, you will be once you get through that sun drenched, sexy and colorful delight. I promise. So Luca, not my Luca the director Luca, has a new film that I am literally on the edge of my seat waiting for.
Bones and all stars Indie Darling Timothy Chalamet and OG indie darling Chloe Sevingy, which if you ask me is enough to just see the film no matter what it’s synopsis is, but if that doesn’t quite convince you then maybe this will…
It’s been shot entirely on 35mm film and there is a great article about it on the Kodak website which I highly recommend reading. There are two trailers so far and both look amazing. One features a Joy Division song as it’s backing and the other a Leonard Cohen song so I mean come on, are you excited or what? I am, can you tell??
I would tell you what it’s about but I feel it may put some of you off so go watch the trailer and comment below if you are vibing hard with this film’s theme, look, cast, soundtrack and director, as much as I am.
See you next week my beloved readers.
Love Lucy xx
