I think with the 8-27% price rise on certain Kodak film stocks, it's pushing a lot of people to quit film altogether and go via the digicam or DSLR/Mirrorless route.
I'm very much in the film or die camp and hope to stay there till I have no choice! 😂
It's crazy. I'm in Northern California and I noticed the prices here shot up since Covid, and have stayed up. I wonder if there is a real reason for it, or if they just didn't want to take them down. Anyways it is hard right now.
I started shooting digital (digicam, DSLR) then film. I'm in love with both and let's say I'm in a relationship with film now. I agree with you when you said photography is photography no matter what and honestly, I don't care about the tool. Have seen so many beautiful and inspiring pictures with digital (including phones) and film and I just want to never lose my favorite hobby/passion. Btw, amazing articles – as always. Luv from Brazil!
Wow, I was working on an article of my own about film vs. digital, lol, I love synchronicity. Wonderful article. I'm also a film and digital shooter, but I shoot more digital. I started there, I am self-taught and digital gave me the instant feedback I needed to learn how to expose correctly. I love film though, and in my personal work, I always edit with a film look in mind. Film is just so beautiful. When you look at the old color guys, Saul Leiter, Ernst Haas, and Frank Herzog, how can you not fall in love with film? I also agree wholeheartedly, I have had a very similar experience with the photography community. I think it is really about tools. We shoot with the tools we love and that will help us. On professional shoots, for example, I shoot tethered so my clients can look and make adjustments if needed and also they honestly seem to appreciate it. The fact that most of your paid work is film work, man, that is awesome! I am excited for you and happy to hear that you get to shoot in the medium you love so much. It's a difficult industry, and I have a lot of preconceived ideas that potential clients have that I have to work with, and a lot of the clients I have think film is obsolete, lol. Little do they know! Sorry for turning this comment into a book, lol. Keep on keeping on. 👊
