There is a troubling addiction in libraries of which I have become a victim: the discards and donations table where you can pick up aused book or CD for a buck or two. Being driven partly by the treasure hunt and part by the random possibilities that are offered. A cheap gamble with the payoff of discovering a new focus. The problem is the items come in the front door faster than they go out the back. So take care! Gary

Haha yes I know what you mean with the coming in faster than they go out. We tried a one in one out rule with cameras books etc. and have not stuck to it at all haha 😆

This article was a tonic - and a much needed one. Your comments on libraries had me in the first paragraph. I'm a library person and library photographer - although it is a subject I am in a perpetual struggle with. You wrote of them as a haven with no downside. That's true. For me, however, trying to reveal the obvious and the ignored, they can be a puzzle, or a riddle, or even a mystery. I love my library photography but elevating photographs beyond the documentary can be tricky.

Love a library moment! Such a chill space that’s full of limitless discoveries. When I moved to Amsterdam suddenly 90% of the books were tricky to read and I’d go read children books to practice Dutch 🤣

I relate so much on your praise of librairies! For decades now I’ve been promoting them, pushing my kids, my friends, families, students there…. It also echoes a great article by the British writer Zazie Smith. I think it was called ‘The North West London Blues’
