I think I subscribed to your newsletter in like a recommended thing when subscribing to another newsletter. This is the first one I read from you, and I will be reading them from now on as you post. Your style of writing is honest. You don't come across as trying to write just to get more subscribers. It was like a conversation with my little sister - the one I like.
This idea of burner photos is cool. I call them my personal stock. Not really good enough for actual stock but work as a background for a daily quote for my notes. Sometimes us photogs get too wrapped up in making photos that we forget to just take a few snaps for fun.
Hello 👋🏻 thank you so much ☺️ this is really cool to read and I’m glad that you enjoyed this one! I’m also stoked to be reminiscent of the little sister that you like too haha nice 👍🏻 I hope you enjoy the future newsletters. You may like a couple of short stories I wrote over on the Kosmo Foto website too!
Oh thank you for such a lovely comment! This is really great to hear and I appreciate you taking the time to comment and for reading this newsletter. Excited for you to get sharing!
When I read how you described Lux as high fi and you as low fi, that's totally Chris and I! lol As far as how we connect best to what we shoot and how we shoot! I'm much more half hazzard and just flitting around a scene shooting madly, where he will take a lot of time to set up a single shot and get all the details just right! I think it's so fantastic as I think his photography is spectacular, it's just approached differently that I do mine. We both crave a different experience behind the lens like you and Lux! Great read today, I admire that you just do you, and don't try to be anything ingenuine. Its a great trait and one that has proven to take you far!!
Thank you so much Suzanne! Haha I smiled reading this because it does indeed sound like a similar situation to Lux and I. I love that! If I can't be myself than I don't really want to be at all and sometimes it works in my favour haha but sometimes it makes me stubborn and get me into trouble. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts I really appreciate it. xx
I watched a brief documentary about the Artist Prince on YouTube recently. One of the interviewees said that Prince wouldn’t do a second take of a song, while recording, opting the keep the first take because it had the magic. He was afraid that redoing it over and over would become too clinical (paraphrasing). I think this is why I like zone focusing the 21mm on my Leica M10. I have no frame lines for perfect framing, and I often shoot from the hip which results in loose, fun perspectives that I may not have tried if taking things more seriously. I’m not comparing myself to the late Prince, but I can see what he might have meant. Trying too hard can (in somethings) make all my images start to look the same with perfect horizons and carefully constructed compositions. This type of shooting is fun and helps me to reconnect with the youthful exuberance I had when I received my first camera.
Oh yes! A BIG YES to all of what you've said here Brandon! Prince is onto something there for sure. I find the first take of filming can be the same too. I do one take and think oh no I'll do it again and see if i can say it better and then it's often that first one that came out more genuine. LOVE this little fact about Prince too - he was a talented man so glad to learn from him by way of you. Thank you :)
Lucy, you write how you speak, and I love that! Great and engaging blog post... also its so cool how you and lux are so different! And I can't get over that you married someone with a name like lux lumen... now if that isn't meant to be... I don't know what is! I'm a recovering hifisnob as well. Lol! Congratulations on doing what you love! Cheers. Michael
Thank you Michael! This is such a lovely comment and really motivates me to keep writing. I read aloud when I write haha and this is the only way I really know how to write to be honest as my secondary schooling was very minimal. I love that you are also a hifi snob haha I'm a food snob so we all have our snob status to claim in some area of life. Thanks again for reading :)
It's really interesting to read your post about the photos you describe being taken in a certain kind of mindspace. Love the name burner photos! For me it reflects a parallel world for all those who live through such moments, it only makes sense to you and on a second glance the meaning evolves to stay with you. Quirks of life observed in all honesty and perhaps a mirror to the inner life.

Thanks for making me smile.
I can relate so much to this, the burner shots and blogging when it’s prehistoric. I need to dip my toes and get to sharing.
Thanks, this time for the inspiration!

I tried to ‘gamify’ my photography recently when I lost some motivation https://open.substack.com/pub/creativexplorer/p/juxtapallooza
Love this! What a great article and simple system for people to follow. I adore hearing how others go about creating so thanks for sharing that! :)

I would love to see side-by-side the photos you and Lux took on the same photo walk or shoot.
Most of the music I like is celebrating its 50th anniversary and sadly I can remember hearing them as a teenager, yes I am officially #old!!

I always look for burner shots! Kudos.
