I started photography in the film era. My film gear has been stored away, and I recently got some of it out. I’ve got some Minolta SLR gear, and a Nikon FE that someone gave me a few years ago that I never tried out. In that stash I also have an old Pentax point and shoot, weatherproof with a zoom lens. I think I need to put batteries in that and see if it still works.
if you're open to recommendations, I'd suggest the Olympus Trip AF 30. I started my journey in film on that, very reliable, robust and surprisingly sharp
I literally got my point and shoot cause of you. A Ricoh ls 20. It’s clean and was cheap. Started my love for Ricoh cameras and the need to save up for that “ GR model” that everyone craves. I’m atm looking at one Panasonic model p&s that is called the Leica mini p&s 🤤 the images that I seen is great. Peace ✌️
Completely agree. I started with a point and shoot in the 90s, that's how we learned. There's been many over the years but I now have a Hanimex 35fx that I bring everywhere. So small and fun and it's bright red
A used to have a digital point and shoot, Sony Cybershot was my first camera, outside those film disposables lol Think you've convinced me I need to get another.
I have a cybershot and a few other old digital point and shoot cameras and they are so fun! Hope you enjoy creating with a compact camera again and thanks for reading :)
"...people act so differently when a smaller more compact looking camera is raised. There is a more light hearted and fun feeling and this can work to bring out different vibes in your subjects"
Absolutely. My point & shoots are digital, but it's for this reason.
I’ve recently been carrying my EOS100D with a fixed 24mm lens (38mm equivalent) It’s still compact and light. Not as light as a point and shoot I will admit. But it has proved handy to have in my small messenger bag, which I use all the time.
This reminds me something I read years ago in an ancient photography book that suggested everyone should try shooting with a box camera. They are so bad that if you manage to get a decent shot you will feel invincible.
I have a bunch of compacts and zoom compacts. Rollei, Pentax, Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Fujica. I have no doubt that they all still work. I'm not sure if I'll ever use them, but I got them cheap at op-shops over the years, just in case.
Back in 2013, I was supposed to go on a vacation to NYC with some friends. I was very excited and planned on taking one or two film cameras, including a 35mm Minox. Unfortunately, I was quietly uninvited, with no explanation! That's life. ;-)
Thank you - you’ve reminded me of the critical place my L35AF holds for me… it was the sole camera I was left with when my M3 jammed while half way through a three month trip around the Balkans. It is a staggeringly sharp little brick. With FP4, image quality is equivalent to the M3/Leica glass. Ridiculous but fabulous.

YES! Pop the batteries in and see if it's working! Such a fun experience shooting with a simple camera. Enjoy and thanks for reading lovely :)
I’ve never used a point and shoot, but I think you’ve convinced me. Great piece.
OMG! You need to get one - it will change your life!

Totally open to recommendations. Thank you!

My little Olympus XA2 travels almost everywhere my main camera goes. Be it a DSLR or a SLR👍👍
So well said Lucy — I can’t have enough point and shoots in my life (can anyone? 😂)
I know right! To me they are the most interesting type of cameras and I want them ALL!!!

OMG bright red camera - what a dream! Glad you love the p & s life too and thanks for reading :)
It is an absolute delight to take out, and when anybody sees it, they smile so it's a winner all round!

You are speaking my language right now, Lucy! Love love love this, it’s what I’ve been fully embracing the last month.

I'm trying to remember my last point and shoot. I have a feeling it was a Ricoh 35mm film. Went with me everywhere. Before I upgraded to Minolta SLR.
You make an excellent case for a point and shoot. I kinda treat my phone camera as my point and shoot.
